About Independent Schools

Independent Schools are not-for-profit college preparatory schools, each governed by a board of trustees and funded by tuition, endowment, and annual giving. They are selective schools, offering high-quality education, including a rich variety of sports, arts, and extra-curricular opportunities. Substantial financial aid attracts a diverse student body.

The schools in the Greater New York area are day schools ranging in size from 200 to 1200 students in grades K-8 and K-12. They can be coed or single-sex. Student-faculty ratios are excellent, with teaching sections averaging 16-18 students.

Independent schools in New York offer salaries, health plans, and benefits that are competitive with NYC public schools. Starting salaries for a recent graduate range from $43,000 to $49,000, with substantial increases for graduate degrees and each year of experience up $70,000-$100,000 range for senior teaching positions; more for chairs.

Most schools will help fund graduate study and underwrite conferences, workshops, and summer programs. There are many opportunities for advancement.

Independent schools are most interested in applicants having a Masters Degree in a major subject area and considerable classroom experience. They do not require certification except for primary grade head teachers, who need either an M.A. or Certification in Early Childhood Education.

Each school has a published policy of non-discrimination in admissions and hiring. Some schools have a religious affiliation but are independent in operation and curriculum.
